How Cellulase Works

Cellulase is a multi-enzyme complex (EC 3.2.1.4) that degrades cellulose — the most abundant polymer on Earth — by cleaving β-1,4-glycosidic bonds between glucose units in the cellulose chain.

Cleaves β-1,4 Bonds

Endo-cellulase attacks the internal structure of cellulose chains, reducing degree of polymerization and releasing shorter oligomers. Exo-cellulase then cleaves cellobiose from chain ends for complete hydrolysis.

Releases Fermentable Sugars

Complete cellulose hydrolysis releases glucose, which can be fermented to ethanol or used directly. In biomass processing, cellulase + xylanase combinations maximize sugar yield from lignocellulosic feedstocks.

Modifies Fiber Surfaces

In textiles, alkaline cellulase targets surface fibrils of cotton and denim, removing pills and fuzz without damaging core fibers — producing a smooth finish or stone-washed appearance.

Cellulase hydrolyzes cellulose into glucose and oligomers. Industrial applications include: juice and wine processing (increased yield, better filtration), biofuel production (cellulose-to-glucose for ethanol fermentation), textile bio-stonewashing and bio-polishing, animal feed (improved fiber digestibility), and pulp and paper processing (drainage and strength improvement).
Acid cellulase (pH optimum 4.0–5.5) is used in fruit juice processing and denim bio-stonewashing where low pH is acceptable. Neutral cellulase (pH 5.5–7.0) suits food applications and feed. Alkaline cellulase (pH 7.5–10.0) is preferred for textile bio-polishing and detergent applications where alkaline conditions are required.
Most fungal cellulases (Trichoderma reesei, Aspergillus niger) are optimally active at 45–55°C. Thermostable bacterial cellulases can operate at 60–70°C. Our food-grade neutral cellulase is active at 40–55°C, pH 4.5–6.5.
Cellulase targets cellulose (β-1,4-glucan chains). Hemicellulase and xylanase target hemicellulose (arabinoxylan, glucomannan). In practice, commercial enzyme preparations for biomass processing often contain both for complete cell wall degradation. For baking and feed applications, xylanase is typically used alone.
Cellulase activity is commonly expressed in U/g (units per gram) or CMC-ase units (carboxymethyl cellulase activity). Our products are supplied in activities up to 11,000 U/g. Filter paper activity (FPU/g) may be specified for biomass processing applications. Technical data sheets with assay conditions are included with every order.
