How Phytase Works

Phytase (EC 3.1.3.26) hydrolyzes phytic acid (myo-inositol hexakisphosphate), the primary storage form of phosphorus in cereal grains and legumes, releasing inorganic phosphate and improving mineral bioavailability in monogastric animals.

Breaks Down Phytate

Phytase cleaves phosphate groups from phytic acid, releasing inorganic phosphate directly available for absorption. Monogastric animals (poultry, swine) lack endogenous phytase and cannot utilize phytate-bound phosphorus without supplementation.

Releases Bound Minerals

Standard liquid or non-protected phytase is inactivated at pelleting temperatures (85–90°C steam conditioning).
